Stand Still

Wow. Two years later and this blog is left standing still, the last published post on a once unknown Parisian whose name is all too familiar in the world now.

Isn't it strange how your life can pass you by ten fold and yet there's this moment of the past that stands still forever. I feel so nostalgic when I look at this blog ... the countless hours I spent finding pictures and pouring my heart out into writings that only a select few chose to read ... time standing still in the form of html in a tiny corner of the website.

Who knows where this blog will go now ... I'm sorry for leaving on such an empty note. I came into a point in my life that I don't really remember that much now and anything on this blog was all too personal for me. But now, I feel different, inspired again ... maybe. At least enough to offer an explanation.

Two years is a very very long time, about seven years in the dog world of fashion. But I think I'd like to come back to this soon.

Her godfather is Christian Louboutin and now that Karl Lagerfeld has taken her under his wings, French actress Elisa Sednaoui is poised for greatness. At least in sense of style that is. She's relatively unknown, save for a nuanced performance part in Bus Palladium and a modeling career up her sleeve. Just as with her acting, she's a simple dresser ... a few edited choices and just the right amount of accessories. What I find so intriguing about Elisa, apart from her quiet beauty, is that she chooses primarily black and white pieces but makes up with brilliant cuts and fabrics. A true French women. And a true SAJA girl.

Old, but I'll never forgive myself if these photos don't find a place on my blog. They have gotten me so excited for summer and the ensuing suburban activities that follow. How similar this editorial is to my childhood is quite striking ... No, I didn't possess sweet Miu Miu dresses or Karlie Kloss' lanky legs but nevertheless the malt drinks, the old TV sets in grandma's basement and the dim kitchen visits were daily occurrences.

There's something about Bruce Weber and his photos of young couples that produce such amazing results. Yes, I know that London isn't scones, tea and flowered dresses every day but if the reality is one fourth as good as these pictures lets it be ... then I am on a one way flight to the Big Ben. Does anyone else really want an English boyfriend right now, or is it just me?

When you elicit a few hundred comments on The Sartorialist's blog then you know you have something special. Ada Kokosar is a stylist with a specifically 70's vibe and her own brand of Chloe Sevigny cool (it doesn't hurt that they look alike). Extremely well put together but still with ease, Kokosar has the stylists knowledge to choose colours and silhouettes fitting to her personality. Photos of her are sparse but I have a feeling she will be popping up on Jak & Jil and Garance Doré anytime soon ...

I didn't know if I should make this into a completely different post but at the risk of sounding too show-offy, I'll just post it here. I was recently reading July Stars, and she blogged about being mentioned in the British Fashion Council's blog hub. I was intrigued to see who else was included so I scrolled down ... and then I became more than shocked to see my blog, right there in between SRC783 and The Sartorialist. I'm one of those people that can never take a compliment and self deprecating humour is what I'm known for. So whenever someone leaves a nice comment or sends a kind email I can never fully believe it. But to see someone pick my blog as their favourite ... its honestly such a great feeling. So thank you to whomever, congratulations to all of the other beautiful blogs and make sure you visit the site to read the others. Thank you.

Could it be? A change in the tide? After six endless seasons of eighties new-wave and grunge recalls there seems to be something fresh in the air - and its no surprise that its coming from Paris. The city's venerable cool girls Phoebe Philo and Stella McCartney both showed collections filled with sparse colours and great attention to detail. There were sheers, slim trousers and most importantly - legs. Minimalism is too sparse a word to describe where fashion could be heading right now but adjectives like fresh, clear and simple come to mind. Its like Balmain's younger sister is taking her turn in the spotlight, the one obsessed with French cinema and cashmere knits ...

Dressed for Battle is a prime example of less is more. Kendra Spear's latest editorial in Vogue Nippon has the requisite strenght that has been lacking in editorials as of late. It is black and white and shot against a simple background yet it provides a bigger impact than most larger scale productions.

Alasdair McLellan has that rare photographic quality in that his pictures all look candid. Considering your viewpoint, this may or may not be a good thing - but it is true that McLellan shoots his models as people, not objects. With a Bruce Weber-esque touch to his photographs, his lens captures models and actors in various states of undress in this latest profile in the December 2009 issue of UK Vogue. What is even more refreshing about his work is that the girls are sans the usual extravagant makeup and hair - they rather looked like they just climbed out of bed and walked on to the set. Of the two years I have been posting on Starbucks and Jane Austen (happy belated birthday!) one of my favourite posts has to be one my first. In 2007, a little line called The Row was launched by the ever chic Olsen sisters, and the blog community went crazy. I went as far as to capture stills from their released inspiration video and post them on SAJA. It's quite amusing to see them reposted in places, seeing as how I did it on a whim ... It more amazes me that the outfits I loved back then are still so beautiful today. Ultimately, I think the Olsens achieved their main goal with their clothing collection - to create those classic beautiful pieces that a girl will keep going back to in her wardrobe. And for a trip down memory lane (and much needed inspiration), the stills that I managed to capture in my technology-inhibited ways ...

Extravagant, vulgar, decadent, spare, haunting, revolting ... director Rainer Werner Fassbinder's work has induced polar reactions in his viewers but I believe it is safe to say that every person that sits down to watch his work leaves mesmerized. Watching his films is ... an experience, to say the least. Like any good fashion blogger, I have to be the one who finds sly fashion nuances in his works, none more so than in Chinese Roulette. Chinese Roulette is a story of games, both literal and figurative, but it is also a source of sartorial inspiration. Anna Karina's brilliant headscarves and sparkle dresses are the wardrobe of a bohemian lost at Studio 54, and represent a flighty decadence. At her parallel is the prim and proper wardrobe of Angela ... just don't let those bows and ringlets fool you ....

My loyalty to Teen Vogue has waned over the years. You see, once you pass a certain age, buying any magazine with Miley Cyrus on the cover seems a bit odd. In fact buying a magazine with Miley Cyrus on the cover is odd at any age. But subtle digs aside, I need to have the October issue of Teen Vogue. Not just because models are gracing the cover, which happens once every three blue moons, but because of this editorial. With fashion taking a rock and roll turn, it's only fitting that a tribute to Nirvana would be in order. And this time it is done brilliantly by the powers that be at Teen Vogue. I love the mix of knits and plaids, particularly the red, blue and white floor length skirt. Finding Nirvana is the quintessential Teen Vogue editorial - romantic, charming and with a strong element of escapism at play.

To find solace amongst the insanity of fashion week is unimaginable, yet it is a capable feat when one looks at the photos of these next two photographers.
An uploader on flickr, (the perfect site to lose time on) Andrew photographs behind the scenes of fashion collections. Yet while other photographers focus on the madness and mess, Andrew manages to capture the vulnerable side of this time, the brief moments in which models manage to take a breath and a seclusion is enclosed around them.

Another photographer brilliant at this aesthetic is Anne Combaz. At a time when so many images are released that magnify the details, and show every pore from head to toe of our favourite models, a more surreal glimpse is more appreciated. Combaz uses light brilliantly, to create a small solace, just as her predecessor in this post.

I don't often do runway reviews, but this just had to be posted ...
You cannot deny that Karl Lagerfeld is a Renaissance Man. There are few things that he hasn't conquered, whether it be photography or design. His latest collection for Karl Lagerfeld is yet another example of his fine tuned senses. Though the clean lines and perfected tailoring may suggest an obsessive compulsive at heart, his whimsical touch is still there. The invitations to his show "featured Mondino's classic shot of skinny Karl as guitar hero". His musical theme continued on to the details in his clothing, whether it was a hidden Karl jamming on his guitar in a coat lapel, or to the obvious guitar bodies on the lunettes. There are few shows that I fully look at on style.com but I utterly devoured this collection. I can't wait to see what Karl has in store next at Chanel - if it is one half as charming as this collection, then I will be pleased.

The metal detailing on these dresses was stunning. I love the idea of making a pattern from embellishments.

KARL LAGERFELD SPRING SUMMER 2010

One can't deny that Karl Lagerfeld drew inspiration from his own style for this collection but there were some surprising references to Beethoven in the folds and volumes of the clothing ... the rock references were present, but the old classics were not forgotten.

If you're going to be championing the eighties revival this fall, then you should brush up on your fashion history - a little lesson is in need.
No one did the big shoulders and eighties androgynous look better than the infamous Tina Chow. An American born German-Japanese model, she was one of the faces of the carefree and luxurious decade that brought us big shoulders and overprocessed hair. Yet Tina was a groundbreaker, with her short masculine hair and minimal makeup, along with a strict colour palette of red black and white. She attended parties with the likes of Andy Warhol, Richard Gere (a former lover), Paloma Picasso and Manolo Blahnik, and championed couture clothing before it was the rigeur de jour. Her vast collection of pieces included vintage Dior, Balenciaga and Vionnet. She eventually went on to become a jewelery designer of organic crystal pieces and continued to make her mark on the world of fashion in small ways. Sadly, her story does not end happily. She contracted aids from an affair with a French woman and died at the all too young age of 41. But something tells me, that if she were still with us today ... she would fit right in, by easily standing out.

The Daria coverage may be a little redundant, but I figured we only see her out twice a year so I better make the most of it. I love how she makes such a standout dress her own, with loose hair a suede bag and piles of jewelery. The whole look is very nonchalant and not contrived as many red carpet looks are. I think Daria has that certain je ne sais quoi that French icons like Jane Birkin and Francoise Hardy perfected.

This photoshoot of Grace Kelly for Life magazine happens to be one of my favourite celebrity portraits. Its because it is just Grace as Grace, not Grace the Princess or Grace the Hollywood star. Just a girl from Philadelphia, enjoying her life.

A message from a reader ...

These have always been some of my favorite photos of Grace as well. You really need to credit the photographer - his name is Howell Conant. He was Grace's favorite and became the princely family's photographer after she married Rainier. These shots are from a vacation she took with her elder sister Peggy in 1955, and were shot for Collier's magazine. It was Grace's idea that Conant join them in Jamaica to do the shoot there.

Pick up Howell's beautiful book, "GRACE- An intimate portrait of Princess Grace by her friend and favorite photographer" c. 1992 by Random House. It has always been one of my favorite books of my cousin. (A biopic was made of her - it was awful). The thought of Ms. Paltrow playing her is awful as well. The thing people missed about Grace was that she loved to laugh, and that she really loved people. She was never an Ice Princess - she was shy, she was nearsighted, and this led to some people thinking she was a snob. But really, she was a very decent human being. I'm so glad that people are still interested in her - and I agree - she is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen!

When films are of such high caliber that they manage to project a great story, brilliant acting and imaginative scenery, oftentimes, the styling is lost in the midst of it all. This is not the case in the highly anticipated Quentin Tarantino film Inglourious Basterds. Watching it last night I was entranced by the story line, but even more by a certain French actress - Mélanie Laurent. Playing French Jewish Shosanna Dreyfus her perfomance was sharp and meticulous, as were her outfits.
There is something about the simplicity of her clothing and the omniprescent cigarette that make me wonder, will Shosanna go down as one of films iconic "style muses", and join the leagues of Margot Tenenbaum and Annie Hall? The tweed cap and little red dress certainly do help ...

There's no doubt that this editorial will be popping up on countless blogs, but I couldn't let this beautiful shoot go past this blog. Anna J as Annie Hall is a funny choice, considering that Diane Keaton is perfectly imperfect, but the louche and inspiring styling saves this story.
At a time when short tight Balmain dresses and chunky black shoes are the outfit de rigueur, a feminin/masculin take on style is refreshing. Especially considering Annie Hall took such structured seperates, and by mixing them with dégagé pieces such as bowler hats and bows, made the look entirely relaxed.

Pretty Woman still remains one of my favourite movies of all time ... well ok, after Breakfast at Tiffany's. It has every element in a movie that I need - the quintessential shopping spree, Prince and Richard Gere. And even though Richard is kind of an asshole, and the 'stripper with the heart of gold' bit is predictable, I love every minute of this film. It doesn't hurt that it indulges my eighties craving too.

my first foray into the fashion world was my collection of models street style. five years ago, i saved every picture to my computer of their effortless style. so i figured the next place for them to go was on the blog. each new "model profile" will feature a model that has particulary good sartorial senses.
first is julia stegner. i think shes the closet model there is to an actual princess. despite black being the signature colour staple of many models, julia manages to bring brights into her wardrobe while still maintaining a chic allure

Vika Gazinskaya will only need her first name in the next few months. She's a sartorialist favourite, popping up on fashion blogs with her unique style - half edgy, half soft and completely her own. if you remember, she was the one who supposedly influenced ysl's fall 2008 beauty look. what i find so intriguing about her is that although she tries different styles and never wears the same thing, everything fits together.
